City-wide Building Inventory

Learn about the historic homes and businesses of Oberlin through the City-wide Building Inventory.

What is the inventory?

The Oberlin Heritage Center, along with the City of Oberlin's Historic Preservation Commission, inventories about 50 sites a year in Oberlin and completes an Ohio Historical Society's Historic Inventory Form for each property.  The form provides a brief description of the location, background, and architecture of a building, site, structure, or object of architectural or historical significance.

What is it used for?

The Ohio Historic Inventory is used by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office staff, by various state, local, and federal agencies, and by the general public for making land-use planning, urban development, community preservation, and road-improvement decisions. In addition, the inventory serves as an official archive and body of information for researchers and property owners.

What is it not used for?

The Ohio Historic Inventory form does not automatically nominate or indicate acceptance of a property to the National Register of Historic Places, though it may serve to bring an eligible property to the attention of local and state governing bodies. It does not designate a property as an Oberlin Historic Landmark, although all surveyed properties are eligible to apply for City of Oberlin Landmark status.

The Ohio Historic Inventory is not a form of protection for a historic resource, nor does it provide property owners with a list of do's and don'ts.

The Ohio Historic Inventory is not intended to be the complete story on a given property; it is an inventory. The pertinent information is necessarily brief and condensed, hence the need for accurate and informative documentation. The reports weposted online were created from information available at the time.  Many of our property files have since been updated and visitors are invited to schedule an appointment to see them in our Resource Center.

Learn More at the Resource Center

If you want to know more about a property than what is included on the Ohio Historic Inventory Form, we often have additional records in our Resource Center that can be viewed by appointment. Please know that these records are always growing and changing. If you find an error or have any additional information, we are more than happy to update our files. Changing the official Inventory Forms is more difficult but we do periodically submit changes to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.

To view the inventory forms, you will need Acrobat Reader.
