Great News for Oberlin!
Hip Hip Hooray; We're Proud of Our Town!Oberlin is attracting well-deserved national recognition! On March 3rd, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Oberlin one of their Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2004. The nomination was submitted by the Oberlin Heritage Center. The Dozen Distinctive Destinations program promotes heritage tourism and markets historic communities that cherish and preserve their history. It recognizes communities across the country that offer enjoyable natural, historic, aesthetic, recreational and cultural experiences. Each has a dynamic downtown, commitment to historic preservation, interesting architecture, cultural diversity, and economic base of locally owned businesses, and walking access for residents and visitors. These communities offer striking alternatives to Anyplace, U.S.A., and demonstrate the joys and benefits of a well-preserved historic community. They are exciting choices for tourists who enjoy visiting historic sites and communities. We have made special T-shirts to celebrate Oberlin's distinction! They are available in Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large for $12.99 and XX-Large for $14.99, and proceeds from the sale of each shirt will support the Oberlin Heritage Center's History Education Endowment Fund. To buy an Oberlin "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" T-shirt, stop by the Monroe House, or print and send in this order form. You can also purchase the T-shirts at Ben Franklin/MindFair at 13 W. College St. in downtown Oberlin. You can download a copy of the National Trust's press release about Oberlin's designation, and here is some more information about the Dozen Distinctive Destinations program. Find out what other communities have been recognized this year and in previous years; you'll see that Oberlin is in good company! The National Trust for Historic Preservation is the nation's largest preservation organization. To learn more about the National Trust, visit their web site at www.nationaltrust.org. |
