Oberlin Heritage Center Committees

The Oberlin Heritage Center has three kinds of committees: Board Committees, Board directed Ad Hoc Committees, who oversee special board related projects and Executive Director Advisory Committees, who are appointed by and report to the Executive Director.

Board Committees

The Development Committee leads the board's participation in development and fundraising and approves and monitors all fund-raising activities and events.

Finance and Investments Committee

The Finance and Investments Committee coordinates the board's financial oversight responsibilities by recommending policy to the board, interpreting it for the staff, and monitoring its implementation.

Strategic Planning Committee

The Strategic Planning Committee reviews the current plan and coordinates new strategic planning efforts at least every three years. This committee annually reviews the Oberlin Heritage Center's governing documents.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee determines the composition of the board by identifying, recruiting and proposing board members and officers. The committee is also responsible for selecting a slate of officers and for orienting new trustees to the Organization.

Special Projects Committees

Docents

Docents educate our visitors about the significance of our buildings and collections, they share stories about the people who occupied these buildings, and they shed light on the founding and early history of the community and college. Docents may assist with tours on a regular basis, or on an as-needed basis. They may conduct full guided tours of all three of our buildings, or they may prefer to be assigned to one or two rooms in a particular building during an open house. Volunteers meet as a group on occasion for continuing education and social activities.

Living History VolunteersLiving History Volunteers

Living History volunteers research, develop, and present first-person characterizations of Oberlin figures involved in some manner with the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858. They perform at the annual Oberlin Heritage Center's Living History Open House each fall and at other events as requested.

Oral History

Oral history volunteers organize, transcribe, and find ways to share with the public a collection of tape-recorded interviews made with more than 80 Oberlinians in the past 25 years. They also identify and conduct new interviews with local residents. The group meets periodically as needed, and much of the work can be done on their own as schedules permit.

Westwood Cemetery Inventory

Westwood Cemetery Inventory volunteers document data from tombstones in Westwood Cemetery. These volunteers work on their assignments individually and at their own pace.
