2002 Annual Meeting
Over
150 people attended the Oberlin Heritage Center's
annual meeting and dinner at the Oberlin Inn in April and enjoyed a presentation
by School Superintendent Dr. Beverly Reep. President Roberta Garcia presided
at the business meeting. Oberlin public school students and teachers who
participated in History Day were recognized. Jean Simon of the Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee presented the first Oberlin
Heritage Center Community Awards to the following recipients:
- Community Historian Award, given to Richard P. Lothrop
"Dick Lothrop's many and wide-ranging contributions to Oberlin and to
knowledge of its history need little elaboration! For the depth, breadth
and accuracy of his research on the town's past and a deep appreciation
for his generosity in disseminating what he has learned, whether in
print, on television, or in person, what better way to thank Dick for
all his work and all his caring and sharing, than by naming him the
first recipient of this award."
- Keep Oberlin Beautiful Award, given to Michael D. Ives
"Mike Ives and his City crew face the daunting task of, among numerous
other duties, performing routine maintenance for the City's park, playground
and cemetery areas. Not only does Mike care about Oberlin but he treats
mourners, researchers, and other Westwood visitors with unfailing respect
and cordiality and frequently goes the proverbial extra mile to preserve
our beautiful and historic cemetery as habitat for fauna as well as
flora, following quietly in Frank Zavodsky's footsteps."
Oberlin
Heritage Center Volunteer of the Year Award, given to Sarah MacLennan
Kerr
"Sarah MacLennan Kerr's amazing dedication to [the Oberlin Heritage Center], her skills as
an editor, writer, desk-top publisher, interpreter and project coordinator,
as well as her genuine enthusiasm for all things Oberlin, for her tremendous
work on [the Gazette], the cemetery project, and other labors
of love, for giving of her time and skills out of an enormous appreciation
for the people and history of Oberlin, Sally is a worthy recipient of
this award."
- Teacher of the Year Award, given to Donna Marie Shurr
"Donna Shurr inspires her students at Oberlin High School to learn through
community service projects, History Day, the annual Gingerbread Extravaganza
and more. Her unique, wonderful combination of creativity, enthusiasm,
and innovative teaching techniques encourages students to look beyond
the walls of the classroom and to learn by doing and serving others.
Donna is the guiding force behind the creation of dozens of wonderful
confections for the annual [Oberlin Heritage Center] Gingerbread Extravaganza."
History Day projects completed by Oberlin secondary school students were on display during the social hour.
As part of the business meeting, Scott Broadwell was elected as 2nd Vice President and John Rote III was elected as treasurer. Continuing officers are Roberta Garcia, Board President, Cathe Radabaugh, 1st Vice President, and James White, Secretary. Shirley J. Shubert, an active Oberlin Heritage Center volunteer and life member, was elected as a new trustee. Re-elected to the Board were Ann Livingston, Eugene Simon, Thelma Quinn Smith and James White.
