What We Do

Young visitors take part in some hands-on history exploring!

Mission

The Oberlin Heritage Center is our community’s historical society and historic preservation organization as well as a complex of historic sites that is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Our non-profit membership organization is dedicated to preserving and sharing our community’s unique heritage and making our community a better place to live, learn, work, and visit. Founded in 1903 as the Village Improvement Society, our organization was known until recently as the Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization (O.H.I.O.).

Programs and Projects

Check out our wide range of current programs and events, and an archive of past favorites! (Looking for an event idea, or remember something you attended in years past? Try these earlier archives: 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002/2001.)

The Oberlin Heritage Center also performs research into a number of history-related themes, including genealogy and family history, architectural history, oral history, and markers in Westwood, the local cemetery. In addition to all this, the Oberlin Heritage Center makes available resources to individuals doing history research of their own. Some resources are available online; others can be used, by appointment, in our Resource Center.

The Oberlin Heritage Center runs a vibrant tour program, with regularly scheduled guided tours and additional individually-scheduled group tours. The Oberlin Heritage Center tours visit the three buildings on its grounds: the Monroe House, the Little Red Schoolhouse, and the Jewett House.
